EWA BEACH

Ewa by Gentry is the second largest planned community in the State of Hawaii, with an estimated 10,000 homes at build out.  Our community is socio-economically, culturally, and ethnically diverse, yet we are united in our goals to being environmentally responsible and to being good neighbors-not only within our community, but also as families sharing the Ewa Plain.

 

The term "Ewa" means "Stray" in Hawaiian, it comes from the myth that one day the Gods were playing a game of ʻ ulu maika and while playing one of the "rolling stones" went astray. The Gods called the area where it landed Ewa for the stray ʻ ulu maika.

Along much of the South Shore of Oʻ ahu, ʻ Ewa is a reference to the direction of ʻ Ewa Beach, roughly westwards along the shore. Related terms are mauka (towards the mountains, roughly northwards), makai (towards the ocean, roughly South), and Diamond Head or Koko Head, roughly eastwards along the shore.
